Fall is here and that means it’s time to bundle up, get outside, and do some home maintenance. Today I’ve got a helpful step by step checklist to get you started on some important projects that need to be done outside your home in the fall. Also, check out my previous checklist for fall interior maintenance.
Today’s checklist is lengthy, so don’t expect to get it all done in one day or even one weekend. It will probably take a few weeks to get it all done. Some things will require professional inspections and repairs, so be sure to call before the busy cold weather months.
Start with the things that you need to work on the most and get to the rest of it as soon as you can, hopefully before the holidays. You might want to get your hubby to help. Are you ready? Grab some sweaters and let’s go outside!
HOUSE EXTERIOR
- Check roof for problems (Professionals)
- Clean gutters and downspouts (Adults only)
- Check windows, doors, and garage door for drafts, and add weather-stripping and caulk, if needed
- Install storm windows and doors and remove screens
- Get heating system checked (Professionals)
- Inspect gas fireplaces for leaks (Professionals)
- Inspect and clean wood-burning fireplaces, chimneys, and flues (Professionals)
- Check basement windows for drafts and cracks

GARAGE
- Clean and organize garage, lawn mower, and lawn tools
- Get snow supplies ready – snow blowers, shovels, ice-melting products, and emergency kits for cars
- Consider buying a generator for power outages
YARD
- Cut down dead trees (Professionals)
- Trim trees, limbs, and bushes (Adults only)
- Rake or mow leaves
- Winterize outdoor faucets and drain hoses
- Stock up on firewood
I hope this list helps you to get your home all cleaned up and ready for fall and winter. Remember, you might not even need to do everything on this list. So, pick the ones that you think you need for your particular house. Please do the ones that will keep your family safe, such as checking fireplaces, chimneys, and loose porch rails. Be sure to check out my checklist for fall interior maintenance. Also, feel free to print out and use my cleaning system printables for daily, weekly, monthly, and seasonal cleaning.
Now, go warm up some hot cocoa and have a wonderful fall day!
