HEALTHY SUMMER LIFESTYLE HABITS
Overall Well-being
- Practice a positive attitude. There’s no better time than summer to be positive and enjoy life!
- Stress less. Try to take things one day at a time. I, personally, have so much going on this coming year that I feel like I can only survive it one day at a time.
- Practice good sleep habits. I admit, I struggle with this one, but I’ve learned the key for me is to cut back on caffeine and, mostly, to not allow myself to think of anything after I go to bed.
Exercise
- Set fitness goals. Realistically, look at your current fitness level and where you’d like to be. For example, you might want to lose weight, firm up, or just want to feel healthier. You don’t have to aim for being a marathon runner. Just do what would make you feel healthier.
- Set a deadline for when you what to reach your goal. If you have a vacation or special event this summer, that definitely gives you a deadline.
- Map out a week by week plan. Try to improve each week. If your vacation will involve a lot of walking, work up to it each week.
- Get your doctor’s approval. This is especially important if you have specific health issues.
- Get your workout clothes and gear ready for your starting day.
- Stay motivated by giving yourself weekly rewards each week for reaching each step in the plan.
Healthy Diet
- If you want to lose weight, focus on eating a healthy diet and cutting calories.
- Drink lots of water. Try your best to drink 8 glasses a day.
- Cut back on caffeine. This can really mess with your sleep habits, especially on vacation.
- Eat healthy foods. Eat lots of fruits, veggies, whole grains, low fat dairy, and low fat protein. Summertime makes it easy to buy fresh produce!
- Eat less sugar and salt. Try to find healthier alternatives. I admit, it’s hard for me to give up my candy, but I’m trying!
- Eat a diet that is geared towards your biggest health concerns. This can vary. You might have food allergies, family history of cancer, or family history of heart disease. If you do, you should start now eating healthy and avoid those issues. For example, I have stomach issues and really have to watch what I eat. If you’re going on vacation, it’s even more important to get your body ready for a change in your normal routine.
It sounds like a lot to work on, but a special summer vacation or event is the best motivation! And with the beautiful weather and fresh produce stands, it’s almost natural to live a healthy summer lifestyle. So, make the most of it and get ready for a great summer!
